The Four Faces of Relationship Fraud
The traditional romance scammer is familiar: someone you meet online whose identity, wealth, profession or circumstances may be fabricated. Intimacy develops remotely until a financial emergency, investment or request for money appears. In many cases, the person presented to the victim never existed in that form.
But meeting someone does not make his financial story true. An offline romance scammer can use his real face and real name while fabricating his wealth, businesses, assets or financial stability. The man is real; the life he presents may not be.
Other forms of exploitation may not begin with a request for money at all. One version of this behaviour is commonly described online as the “hobosexual”: someone who rapidly enters or advances a romantic relationship because he needs somewhere to live. He may want to move in unusually quickly, have recurring problems with his own accommodation or present temporary dependence as a natural step towards a shared future. Instead of asking a woman to send him thousands of euros, the financial benefit may come from living in her home while she absorbs the rent or mortgage, utilities, food and other costs of his instability.
The methods are different, but the underlying exposure is similar.

You might scroll through relationship downfalls, shake your head, and think: “How could anyone be so naive? That would never happen to me.”
But the behavioural reality of these scams is cold and unyielding. They exploit the evolutionary vulnerabilities of your own mind. Under the high-voltage arousal of intense attention, elaborate projections, or calculated isolation, your rational defences, your System 2, are rendered completely blind. By the time you realise what's happening your brain has been structurally infiltrated, and your peace, your residence, or your capital reserves are liquidated.
The question is therefore not simply whether the relationship is real. It is what the relationship gives him access to.
